Manhunt Unabomber

TV show

Sam Worthington and Chris Noth make a good team in this reenactment of how the FBI caught Ted Kaczynski. The Unibomber was active for almost 20 years and for most of these years the FBI profile said the criminal had a very low IQ but that was wrong and that is why they couldn't find him.  The show is about an FBI analyst that almost goes crazy chasing this guy. David Fitzgerald was recruited to the team because he was the best in his behavioral analyst class and he was very good with words.

Fitz then went on to change the profile to say that the Unibomber was well educated and over 50 based on how he wrote his manifesto. He brought in language professors to help analyse the language in the letters that the Unibomber was writing to the big newspapers. There were many words that were spelled differently then they are spelled now, not wrong just different. It is kinda of hard to understand how they figured everything out, even in the show the use of Ted's different language to say where he was from. They even decided that the manifesto was written like an old school thesis statement.

When the Unibomber sent in his manifesto the FBI decided to put it in the Washington Post because they thought the Uni. lived in San Francisco and the Post was only distributed at one stand in the Bay Area. The FBI spent all day watching this stand and wasted so much money and time doing it. This stakeout was unsuccessful but the manifesto was published and now they could ask if anyone recognized the writing. Ted's sister-in-law recognized it and suggested that her husband report Ted. Fitz then went to collect letters that Ted had written his brother to analyze against the manifesto. They ended up getting the search warrant because Ted said "you can't eat your cake and have it too" and everyone else says it the other way around. Ted used this phrase in both the letters and the manifesto.

The show ends with Ted going to jail for the rest of his life and Fitz getting no credit for all of his work, so I don't know how true the story is. I do know that the Unibomber is real, he was caught, and is still in jail. I don't know anymore details but this story fits with what could happen and it held my attention. I watched it in 2 sittings.

  1. Update: I was listening to True Crime Profile (Podcast) with Jim Clemente, who writes for Criminal Minds (TV), and he is friends with Jim Fitzgerald! They went to Quantico together then went to the New York office together. Tim Clemente also wrote this show.
