Business Wars / Blockbuster vs Netflix

Podcast

Blockbuster was the best at what they did. They were the best way to rent videos which was the best thing to do as a kid. We had Hollywood Video in my neighborhood but still Blockbuster was cooler. I want to say that Blockbuster was the first to rent video games, but that could just be a wrong memory.

But then Netflix came, and it was on the computer. You signed up online and made a list and they would send you DVDs from the list one after the other. It was easier and more convenient. Just that had most of the video rental stores closing their doors, and then the streaming changed life even more and even though Blockbuster tried to create their own streaming system website, it wasn't life changing.

This podcast is about the battle between the 2 companies. It involved corporate espionage; lying to bosses, copying websites, and spying in warehouses! I don't think that I'm spoiling anything to say that Blockbuster ultimately lost the war...

But that wasn't it for Netflix. Streaming became more popular than TV. I personally had Hulu Plus way before I got my first Netflix, but most people have both anyway. But strange enough, HBO was the next battle for Netflix because Netflix was just recycling old TV shows but HBO had original content and you could watch it whenever you wanted. The only way Netflix could beat that was to make it's own original content! Cue House of Cards! I don't know if the war is over but Netflix seems to be doing something right and it was really intense listening to how they managed to do it.
