Crimes of Grindelwald

Movie- Harry Potter franchise

This is a sequel to Fantastic Beasts. The first installment was about Newt Scamander the author of Harry Potter's text book Fantastic Beasts and where to find them. So it takes place in the 1920s in New York but Newt is from England and went to Hogwarts where Dumbledore taught Defense Against the Dark Arts. Newt likes to take care of creatures, and especially creatures who aren't appreciated by general wizards. He goes to New York chasing one of these creatures and ends up stepping into a MACUSA investigation to find an Obscurus. Obscurus' are magical children who try to repress their magic until they basically explode causing total destruction. The children rarely live. The Director of Magical Security Percival Graves ends up finding the Obscurus and weaponizing it. And in the biggest twist ever! Gellert Grindelwald, the most dangerous and evil wizard of his time ends up being found impersonating a member of MACUSA! Luckily Newt is there to see it and they capture him.

This movie starts with The Ministry of Magic in London picking Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) up from MACUSA to be tried for his crimes in London. Grindelwald is a dark wizard who thinks that pure-bloods should rule the whole world. and this movie shows him announcing his plan for that and collecting the witches and wizards who will help him. We meet up with Newt (Eddie Redmane) while he's talking to his brother Theseus (Callum Turner) and his brother's fiance Leta Lestrange (Zoe Kravitz) and other members of the Ministry of Magic. He then learns that Tina is in Paris chasing the Obscurus from the last movie. It was convenient since Dumbledore (Jude Law) also asked him to go to Paris.

In Paris, the whole gang gets reunited Newt, Tina, Queenie, and No-Maj Jacob go through crazy stuff trying to save the world from Gridelwald. A whole bunch of things happened and although I love Harry Potter and read all of the books, there aren't books to read first with these movies. I watched this movie like it was an stand alone movie and I tell you, there were times where I couldn't blink because what was happening on screen was too epic and I couldn't look away. My husband doesn't like Harry Potter because he just didn't get it. He missed the boat but he said he loved this movie. That is how good it is. It has the magic of Harry Potter while being a fantastic stand alone movie! You have to watch it and the first one too.
