Atlanta Monster

Podcast

This is a podcast from the same people that did Up and Vanished but instead of solving an unsolved murder they focused on telling the story about a person who was blamed for dozens of murders but only convicted of 2. This one is about the Atlanta Child Killer Wayne Williams. I've heard tons of stories about these years of terror in Atlanta. I knew that Wayne Williams had been convicted for it because while the police were watching a river for bodies he drove past and quickly threw a body into said river. I knew that Atlanta was racially divided and that caused controversy. Actually the second season of the show Mindhunter talked about how the arrest and conviction happened. What I didn't know that both the podcast and Mindhunter talked about was that Williams was never convicted of killing a child. He was convicted of killing 2 adults and they just said they caught the monster.
So what Payne wanted to do in this podcast was to talk about the different theories that could hold up. One of which being the KKK and another being multiple killers. Payne also brought up the possibility that Williams was arrested based off of a hunch from a FBI agent who was working with the weird science of profiling. I don't know the time line but John Douglas was one of the first profilers and he helped in this case. So basically the original behavioral scientist was the one who made this profile based on a few serial killers that he'd interviewed. I do think that behavioral science is important and real science but this was an early profile that wasn't researched enough. Then when they found Williams he matched the profile and they arrested him on the spot.
My theory is that there are multiple killers and that many of the murders were committed by the KKK but not all of them. There are also rumors of a sex ring in town that paid little boys to um hang out with them... and many of the missing boys had been seen with and reported being paid by these men. That seems suspicious too. One of the things that leads me to think there could only be one killer is that most of the kids were connected. But there were different causes of death too. I don't know, the case is very complicated and the people of Atlanta were panicking so I understand why they wanted to close the case as quickly as possible. Also one of the theories claiming that Wayne Williams was the killer is that after he was arrested the murders stopped. But that doesn't make sense to me because are they saying that no more African-Americans were killed in Atlanta since 1981? That doesn't seem likely. Anyway this podcast had a lot of good information and it went much faster than Up and Vanished. It's worth a listen and only 10 episodes so good for a road trip.
