Unobscured S3

This was a little bit of a different take on the Jack the Ripper story. A serial killer that was never caught who roamed the Whitechapel district. 11 murders occurred between 1888 and 1891 and they were all poorer women who society barely cared about. Most of us who have any thoughts of history or gore know the story. However Aaron dives deep into the darker parts of history. I listen to 3 different podcasts from him… And I'm obsessed with all of them. So this season starts by talking about the poverty in this area and how people get caught in it's grip. The first episode talks about the Match Women, women who work in the match making factories. I pictured a lot of Fantine (Les Miserables) type situations, I know that took place in France not England but I'm sure it was all over. These women had to support themselves or their families but women who worked were looked down on. Working class took on a whole different meaning when it came to women, women were supposed to get married, have children and be taken care of by their husbands. So society and businessmen took advantage of them. They were caught in the cycle; they needed food and housing so they worked, but then the people in charge wouldn't pay them enough, and made them work in dangerous situations, but they knew something was better than nothing so they did what they had to do. And then there were the woman who couldn't or wouldn't hold down miserable jobs like the match factory who had to turn to drugs or sex work. I have so many issues with the way people treat sex work, see people only look down on the women who are preyed on not the men who pay them to do it. See, if the women weren't paid they wouldn't be doing it. So instead of the morality of the men who pay for it we judge the women who by the way, are judged even for working "an honest job." Ugh Society is just so gross and hypocritical! We can't even say we've changed all that much. Ha back to the story though, I wasn't even sure it was fully about Jack the Ripper. That's how in depth this story is and I love it. It's more about what led to Jack or Leather Apron or Whitechapel Murderer. The terrible and dependent conditions of the slums of London were the perfect backdrop for anyone to do heinous acts. These women were considered barely human and everything was perceived to be their own faults because of the way they lived. But the women were mutilated and it's not like they can do that themselves. I have a theory that it is some super wealthy guys who were just never looked into. I don't even think they were by the same people because not all of them matched. And as we know if 1 person does something bad but gets away with it more people are likely to try the same things. Anyway, this is in my opinion the best way to tell a story. I freaking love Aaron Mehnke and the way he does this stuff. I almost started listening to another podcast of his… But then I found out he wasn't the voice so I didn't.. But this is so in depth and real!
